The Tesla Model 3 is a minimalist, road-legal spaceship providing drivers with the fastest 0-60 time in any car under $40,000. Like a spaceship, the Model 3’s cabin is roomy and perhaps too high-tech. Without prior knowledge of unlocking, entering, starting, and adjusting mirrors and steering wheel, you might feel like you've purchased a spaceship from Ikea. However, after completing a Tesla 101 course at your local university, you'll appreciate its semi-user-friendly interface and reactive window and steering wheel adjustment mechanisms.

A major concern for many potential buyers is the Tesla’s range. Tesla claims a 272-mile range for its base model, with the option to raise that to 333 miles for an additional $7,000 by upgrading to the Long Range Model 3. It's crucial to note that this is an EPA estimate, so it's not guaranteed that you'll reach that distance on every charge, especially if you slam the "gas" pedal at every stoplight.

Trim Levels and Pricing

There are three trim levels for the Model 3. Each trim level comes with basic autopilot, Sentry Mode, over-the-air updates, and access to Tesla’s extensive charging network. In addition to a longer range and quicker 0-60 time, the Model 3 Long Distance and Model 3 Performance feature a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system.

Starting purchasing price according to Tesla's website

We recommend the mid-tier Model 3 Long Distance. It's all-wheel drive, quick, and adds an estimated range of 70 miles per charge.

An important note when buying your Tesla is to remember the $7,500 Federal Tax Credit and an estimated $3,000 in savings on gas over three years.

Exterior, Interior, and Cargo Space

Teslas aren't flashy cars, but they are beautifully designed. The major updates in the 2024 Model 3 include sleeker headlights and taillights that aren't separated by the trunk. Inside, it's comfortable, and due to its minimal interior, very spacious. Faux leather seats are standard on all Teslas and are said to be softer and more durable than real leather.

Above your head is a large glass roof that brings in plenty of natural light and provides more headroom than traditional cloth ceilings. The center console has two large storage containers, one under the armrest and the other below the all-controlling 15-inch infotainment screen. Due to the Model 3's electric motors, there is ample cargo space both in the trunk and the frunk.

Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

One of the best-known features of any Tesla is its self-driving software; unfortunately, on the Model 3, Full Self-Driving Capability is an additional $12,000. For only $6,000, you can upgrade to Enhanced Autopilot, which includes navigation while on autopilot, auto lane change, auto park, and smart summon. If you don’t want to pay for either of these, you still have basic autopilot, a combination of adaptive cruise control and lane following and keeping assistance. As mentioned above, every Tesla Model 3 comes with Sentry Mode, which films its surroundings from every angle when it detects motion, which is incredibly useful for road accidents or parking.

Technology and Infotainment

Tesla’s are some of the most technologically advanced cars on the road today. Its 15-inch infotainment screen does everything including opening the glovebox, turning on seat heaters, housing the speedometer, climate control, camera views, navigation, movies, music, games, and more—a dream for every iPad kid. The Model 3 Long Distance and Model 3 Performance come with premium audio which consists of 13 speakers, 1 subwoofer, 2 amps, and immersive sound. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are not available in any Tesla, instead, you use Tesla's operating system which is semi-user-friendly.

Performance and Efficiency

Driving the Tesla Model 3 is a blast. It’s fast, responsive, and quiet inside, all of which are hallmarks of expensive luxury cars. Off the line, the Model 3 Performance can go from 0-60 in 3.1 seconds. To put that in perspective, in the time it takes the average person to tie their shoes, the Tesla would already be going 60 miles per hour. Unfortunately, this kind of speed doesn't help the range of the battery pack, but it sure is fun.

Owning a Tesla isn’t for everyone; it takes a completely different mindset to daily drive an electric vehicle. The Model 3 makes an excellent commuter car—it’s fun to drive, you’ll never pay for gas, and the turn signal can sound like a fart, but charging will take more of your brainpower than you probably ever thought possible. If you plan on taking long road trips, which is entirely possible, it will take some extra planning around charging that isn’t required when driving a car with a combustion engine.
