The much-anticipated new generation of the Lexus GX has arrived, exhibiting significant upgrades. Featuring a luxurious interior, a boxy new design, and rugged off-roading capabilities, the new GX is a head-turning statement piece. There are three trim levels for the GX, with prices ranging from $64,250 to $81,250. Seating capacity varies based on the trim level; Overtrail and Overtrail+ trims seat five, while all other trims seat up to seven.

The GX is powered by a 3.4-liter twin-turbo V6 engine that delivers 349 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque. Although this engine is smaller than the one in the last generation GX, it offers nearly 50 more horsepower. The GX competes with other luxury SUVs like the Volvo XC90, Audi Q7, and Infiniti QX80.

Exterior Design and Features

The GX makes a statement with its throwback boxy looks and SUV aesthetics, seamlessly blending ruggedness with top-of-the-line luxury. Its signature spindle grille is more prominent than in past years and framed by sleek Triple-Beam LED headlights. The entire body is beautifully sculpted, with harsh contouring lines accentuating the GX's robustness. These lines follow the entire length of the body and add to its architectural silhouette. Notable sculpting under the doors gives the GX a wide-body look and feel without being obtuse.

Its full-length tail lights are on full display at the back, underlining the Lexus name. Some of the most enjoyable and luxurious exterior features include headlight wipers, a kick sensor-activated power rear door, and a large Dynamic Sky™ panorama glass roof, which, on the GX Luxury+ trim, can go from clear to opaque with the click of a button.

The Overtrail and Overtrail+ trims feature an aluminum skid plate, 18-inch six-spoke alloy wheels, and 33-inch all-terrain tires. The other two trims, Premium and Luxury, do not have the aluminum skid plate and ride on 20- or 22-inch wheels, respectively.

Interior Luxury and Comfort

Lexus's design philosophy centers around hospitality. It aims to make customers as comfortable as possible by anticipating their needs and delivering the best driving experience. This is why it uses high-end materials like semi-aniline leather, which gives the seats a uniform look and feel while enhancing durability.

The front seats are heated, ventilated, and power-adjustable and feature five massage settings, ensuring comfort and rejuvenation even on the longest trips. The cabin offers generous legroom, headroom, and elbow room, ensuring comfort for every passenger. Up to six USB-C ports and an optional wireless charger ensure everyone can stay powered up.

Performance and Off-Road Capabilities

Tackle winding mountain roads, rocky obstacles, and weather conditions with the GX’s full-time 4WD system, paired with a Torsen torque-sensing limited-slip differential. This system ensures power is distributed to all four wheels, automatically adjusting and compensating if one or more wheels slip.

The Lexus adaptive variable suspension enhances off-roading comfort, even for those with back issues. The suspension system is also customizable, allowing the driver to control the feel of the road.

Under the hood, the twin-turbo 3.4-liter V6 engine produces 349 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque, surpassing last year's model in power. Connected to a 10-speed automatic transmission, the GX has an estimated 0-60 time of 6.5 seconds. While not the fastest luxury SUV, its powerful engine and robust frame allow for towing up to 8,000 pounds.

Technology and Safety

A 14-inch touchscreen display is centrally located on the dash, offering wireless connections to Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It also displays up to four different camera angles to assist with off-roading or parking. An additional 12.3-inch multi-information display shows speed, RPM, and drive mode.

The GX features several driver assistance features, including Traffic Jam Assist, which accelerates, brakes, and follows the car in front at a preset distance. Intuitive Parking Assist and a Rear Cross-Traffic Braking system enhance safety during parking maneuvers.

Lexus Safety System+ 3.0 offers a comprehensive package of safety features to protect passengers and pedestrians, and it is included on every trim of the GX. These include a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection and intersection support, lane tracing assist, lane departure alert with steering assist, roadside assist, all-speed dynamic radar cruise control with curve speed management, and intelligent high beams.

Pricing and Value Proposition

As a luxury SUV, the GX's pricing is on the higher side but remains competitive within its class. Our picks for the best trim levels are the GX550 Overtrail or the GX550 Premium+, depending on seating needs. The Overtrail model, suitable for those needing five seats, is poised to become a classic. For more seating, the Premium+ trim offers a stylish boxy design and ample seats. But whatever you choose, we think you’ll be happy. You will regret selling car for the rest of your life.

Its retro boxy design, cutting-edge technology, and luxurious interior make it a timeless SUV, blending luxury and style with all-terrain performance. While not the quickest luxury SUV on the market, it stands out for its practicality, comfort, and style. The 2024 Lexus GX is ideal for those ready to invest in a luxury SUV.
